moargaCaminha

The Monastery of St. John d’ Arga is located in the Arga Mountain, in Arga de Baixo. Its Chapel of St. John, is one of the most important medieval testimonies in the region.

This monastery overlooks the Minho River, and its home to an ancient pilgrimage, worshipping St. John the Baptist.

Although it is not known the date of the monastery' primitive settlement, its characteristics point to the end of the 13th century, as it has a Romanesque architecture. So, it is part of a group of small rural churches, having a main chapel of quadrangular form and thick walls.

The chapel of St. John is only open to walkers during the festival days, having been built up over the centuries. The monastery also has a hostel for pilgrims around the chapel rented by scouts.

The Alto Minho

«...people from the Minho province are the best inhabitants of Portugal, both for their gentleness and friendliness, as well as for their jolliness; their dances and songs have already led a foreign author to compare them to the true shepherds of antiquity.»
